Wax & metal votive offerings
Meaning
A votive offering is a small model of what needed help: a leg, eye, heart, head, a toad for the womb, a kneeling person, or a cow or horse. It is left at a church or shrine in the saint's care.
Intent
Pilgrims offered them to ask a saint or the Virgin for healing of people and livestock, or to thank them afterwards, hanging them at the altar. The toad-shaped votive stood for the womb and was offered for women's ailments and fertility.
Significance
Votivgaben are the direct continuation of the ancient anatomical votive into Catholic Europe, and they record the everyday worries of rural people: sick cows, bad legs, childlessness.
History
Wax and iron votives are recorded from the Middle Ages and flourished at Bavarian and Austrian pilgrimage churches such as Altötting from the 16th to 19th centuries. Iron animal votives (Eisenvotive) were typical of Bavaria, Austria and Slovenia.
Making yours
Wax is cast in two-part wooden moulds and painted. Silver or tin sheet is embossed and cut. Iron figures are forged. Usually 3–20 cm.Medieval & Early Modern Europe: the tradition
Medieval Europe held two protective systems at once: the Church's sacramentals (relics, blessed wax, saints' medals, written prayers) and an older 'natural magic' of stones, herbs and animal parts inherited from Pliny and the lapidaries of Marbode of Rennes (c. 1090) and Albertus Magnus. Pilgrimage produced millions of cheap lead badges. Renaissance courts wore toadstones and bezoars set in gold, and Protestant reformers attacked both relics and charms. In Catholic Bavaria, Austria, Italy and Spain the folk tradition survived into the 20th century, recorded by collectors like Leopold Kriss-Rettenbeck and Rudolf Kriss, whose collections are now in Munich, and by Walter Hildburgh, who gave thousands of Spanish and Italian amulets to the V&A.
