Wedjat eye (Eye of Horus)

Meaning

The wedjat ('the sound one') is the eye of the falcon god Horus, torn out by his rival Seth and restored by Thoth or Hathor. It stands for healing, wholeness and restoration, for royal power, and for offering: in the Pyramid Texts every gift to the gods is 'the Eye of Horus'. Its markings combine a human eye with the cheek pattern of the lanner falcon.

Intent

It was worn by the living to keep the body whole and ward off harm, and placed on the dead, often over the embalming incision, to heal and seal the body. Multiple-eye plaques multiplied the protection. Painted on coffins and boats, the eye let the dead or the vessel 'see' safely.

Significance

It is the most common Egyptian amulet and one of the longest-lived symbols on earth: still painted on Mediterranean fishing boats and sold as a charm worldwide. A popular modern claim that its parts encode the fractions 1/2 to 1/64 comes from a 20th-century reading of hieratic measures and is debated by Egyptologists.

History

The wedjat appears as an amulet in the late Old Kingdom (c. 2300 BCE), becomes universal in the New Kingdom, and reaches its greatest variety in the Late Period in faience, stone, gold and glass. Phoenicians carried it across the Mediterranean, and it survived into Roman Egypt and modern folk use.

Making yours
1–5 cm. Carve from flat stone or mould in blue/green faience; add black glaze for brow, pupil and the falcon-cheek marking. Openwork and multiple-eye versions exist.
Ancient Egypt: the tradition

Amulets appear in Egyptian graves before writing, in the Badarian and Naqada cultures of the fifth and fourth millennia BCE, as shells, stones and simple animal shapes. With the Old Kingdom the repertoire grew into a systematic vocabulary of hieroglyph signs, gods and animals, and by the New Kingdom the Book of the Dead prescribed which amulet went where on the mummy. Mass production in faience from open moulds put them within reach of almost everyone. The Late and Ptolemaic periods (664–30 BCE) are the peak of variety, when a single mummy might carry dozens. The tradition outlived the pharaohs, feeding Graeco-Roman magical gems, Coptic Christianity and, through Phoenician traders, the whole Mediterranean. Flinders Petrie's 1914 catalogue counted 275 types.
