Hypocephali & amulet sets
Meaning
A hypocephalus is a disc representing the eye of the sun, and the whole cosmos the sun crosses: the four-headed ram god, cows of Hathor, boats of the sun and moon, all packed into a circle. Menat counterpoises carry Hathor's power, and strung amulet collars gather many single protections into one garment.
Intent
Placed under the head of the mummy, the hypocephalus (from Greek 'under the head') was meant to surround the head with the sun's warmth and flame, keeping the dead one alive and divine, following Book of the Dead chapter 162. Amulet collars and menats protected the wearer by sound and by Hathor's favour.
Significance
Hypocephali are a rare, late invention of Theban priestly families, and their dense imagery is one of the best condensed maps of Late Egyptian cosmology. A hypocephalus reproduced in the Pearl of Great Price (1842) made the type unexpectedly famous in American religious history.
History
Hypocephali appear in the 4th century BCE (30th Dynasty) and continue into the Ptolemaic period. Only around 150 survive. Menat counterpoises go back to the Middle Kingdom and amulet collars are found throughout Egyptian history.
Making yours
Hypocephali are 10–18 cm discs of gessoed linen painted in black and yellow, or engraved bronze. Menats are keyhole-shaped counterpoises.Ancient Egypt: the tradition
Amulets appear in Egyptian graves before writing, in the Badarian and Naqada cultures of the fifth and fourth millennia BCE, as shells, stones and simple animal shapes. With the Old Kingdom the repertoire grew into a systematic vocabulary of hieroglyph signs, gods and animals, and by the New Kingdom the Book of the Dead prescribed which amulet went where on the mummy. Mass production in faience from open moulds put them within reach of almost everyone. The Late and Ptolemaic periods (664–30 BCE) are the peak of variety, when a single mummy might carry dozens. The tradition outlived the pharaohs, feeding Graeco-Roman magical gems, Coptic Christianity and, through Phoenician traders, the whole Mediterranean. Flinders Petrie's 1914 catalogue counted 275 types.
